Imagine standing in a field of wild asters, bees buzzing around you while looking out at a rainbow of vegetables growing in the fields before you. Rolling hills are in the distance and blue skies support clouds sitting so low in the hollers you’re sure they are within the reach of a human hand. This is Fertile Crescent Farm. Located in the gentle slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Floyd County Virginia and home to a wide variety of seasonal vegetables, a couple of chickens, farm owners Adam Bresa and Darbi Jewell and their young daughter Lucy (an ace with a digging fork and the farm’s official insect investigator).
Whether it’s out in the field or in one of their hoop houses Adam and Darbi strive to grow chemical free produce using sustainable and ecological methods. Believing that soil is a living organism they are committed to nourishing their land and keeping it healthy while growing vegetables through extensive organic practices including conservative tillage, crop rotation, the use of cover crops and compost to name a few.
Fertile Crescent Farm is also involved in a few agriculture, garden and local food projects within the community of Floyd County. They are driven by the conviction that a strong local food system is central to a thriving community and hopes that their produce connects people to where they live and where they eat.
